... two bands, two things...

When i write cards, be they birthday, goodbye, congratulations or random, I always write,

"may life bring you good luck and happy coincidence."

I was lucky tonight. i got both. I did one of my favourite things... I got a last minute invite from a friend to go hear a band i didnt know... and they were awesome. so was the band that opened for them.

First Aid Kit and Samantha Crain both rocked the Riv tonite.

And i learned two very valuable lessons. Valuable enough that i felt they needed to be recorded for posterity, to last for all time on the interweb (the closest modern day equivalent i have to stone tablets):

"a hard on doesn't mean you're in love"  - Samantha Crain

"time is tough on me"  - First Aid Kit

both valuable insights.....

mmmm...... bacon......

I love bacon... apparently so does the rest of the world... as it has prevailed despite its health risks and supine beginning...

As a jew, I am not really supposed to like bacon, or even know whether i dislike it or not, as its cloven hooves makes it forbidden. But I love all things bacon...

However, even the most kosher of jews could enjoy this:

Bacon (set of 4 votives or 4-oz jar candle)

...39 Jesses....

Ever heard of Universal Record Database? It is the site that records all human achievement....

Well someone created a record by showing 17 images of Uncle Jesse from Full House on a computer screen at once....

As a manic Full House fan... I felt it was my duty to beat it... and I did...

Presenting the 39 jesses....

... Woodbridge and Tunnel...

.... my friend Alex made it up... It's my new FAVOURITE saying....

It refers to the Friday night infestation of he 905 into the 416... Alex and Santiago came up with it on Friday when they tried to go out on Ossington. They hit the Ossington, Baby Huey's, PaintedLady, Communist's Daughter... all to no avail...

Each and every bar was packed with boys in chains and girls in shockingly innapropriate footwear and "barely there" shirts. Puking in gutters and making out in the middle of the bar.... (c'mon people, if you have to do it, at least don't block the path to the bartender)

I love it... it so perfectly reimagines a tried and true saying for the EXACT SAME THING, just geographically distinct from the great home of Toronto to which it now refers.....

Woodbridge and Tunnel baby! Save Ossington!

... Stone Fox on the interweb....

So, back in college, when I still entertained the thought that I would one day be a great filmmaker, I used to make stuff....

My friend Zayna and I ran the campus tv station, TVMcGill, which by the way, is awesome to this day (due to my legacy, i'm sure)

Anyway, we use to misappropriate the resources to create our own projects... and this one time, we made a music video for a friends band, by editing it for three straight days during the run up to finals in our last year of school. Holed up in the student union for 72 hours we thought we were creating genius. we were actually creating this:

Now, about five years later, I found it on an afternoon of youtube googling phrases from my personal histopry to see what comes up.... I have absolutely no idea how it got there... as the master miniDV and Beta tapes are somewhere in a box in my apartment collecting dust with my books by Kant and Derrida. But I am happy it did.

Maybe not so my viral internet fame can begin, but definitely because watching it brought back the memories of making it, and those were some of the best days in all the ones I have spent toiling away in the movie industry.

And so I thought I might provide a little how to guide on how to make a horrible music video and guarantee a locked in love for filmmaking and future internet embarassment

DO: Create a dummy production company and change your cell phone answering machine to reflect it, thus giving you a home base to secure corporate sponsorship, thus ensuring you do not run up your parents credit card to make your masterpiece

DO NOT: Answer your cell after you have started drinking at night, or before you aare fully awake the next morning, inspiring your sponsor contact to ask "are you really a professional producer? are you a student?" and causing you to have to do a lot of grovelling and finance most of the video with the credit card your parents don't know about (yet)

DO: Figure out your concept and storyboards early, stick to it and follow through.

DO NOT: come up with a narrative that no one is EVER going to understand like... say... I don't know... a guy who wakes up on the roof in a kiddy pool and can't remember where he was or what he was doing the previous evening, causing him to recall it in flashbacks as he walk the streets of Montreal, only to realize that he had stolen the band's mojo and all the flashbacks were actually the aforementioned band chasing him through the streets, and when he finally puts it altogether he just happens to have mentioned the bands practice space, where they are currently practicing in pajamas, causing yet another chase down the block..... Trust me, you will get it, it won't be clear to anyone else.

DO: Prepare as much of the wardrobe, makeup, props, locations, extras, etc in advance

DO NOT: back down from any last minute challenges or changes. Some that we dealt with here were:
-you aren't actually allowed to shoot in the montreal metro, which we did... so it was my job to distract any and all approaching subway cops while the band shot with the DP. I played stupid lost anglophone about 15 times, french subway cops are mean
-The purple footie pajamas for one of the band members were too bright through the camera, we threw them in a mud puddle, then into a drier at the local laundromat, and they were good to go
-we had NO shots of the dickies clothes or logo when they finally came through with the funds on our last day of shooting... we just went back and reshot some dickie's beauty shots... corporate selling out was ingrained in us early
-we couldn't actually get our hands on a smoke machine to create a "smoke rising from an open bag" to signify the bands mojo... instead we had friends take turns hauling down smokes and breathing out the plumes through a hose we inserted througha hole in the bottom of a knapsack.... we killed a lot of brain cells for our art

DO: Always keep food and snacks on hand to keep everyone happy during the day

DO NOT: Let your main talent get loaded and show up 15 minutes before his call time... The coffee and breakfast burritos you have on hand will sober him up and entice him enough to shoot, but you will end up having to make him look that haggard and hungover for the rest of the shoot

DO: do this... its a once in a lifetime opportunity to be this self-indulgent and have this much fun with almost no consequences....

DO NOT: take yourself to seriously.... in the end, the only thing that will happen is a few hundred people seeing it on youtube a half-decade later, just have fun with it.

... make it an 80s christmas

with betamaxmas.com

Seriously the most awesome of the most radically stellar holiday websites...

I miss my beta... and all the shows that went with it... I had the whole Rocket Robin Hood series taped, with like-era commercials....

... the view from here....

... as I mentioned in my previous post, the window in my office looks out on the hallway... a highly trafficked path that leads to the office screening room and reception (depending on which way you are headed)

So, sick of being like a goldfish on display I slowly began to fill the glass with odd amusements for the passers-by to ogle instead of me... what was one picture two years ago has become this:

(the pictures are super shitty because I took them with my blackberry, not known for its camera skillz)

... i have this weird project ongoing....

... My dad has always, for as long as i can remember, with only one exception, had some type of facial hair... Mostly I remember a full beard and mustache combo... for a while, in the 90's he had a goattee instead. I think it matched his collarless shirts and John Lennon glasses better....

And there was one day, when I was about 8 that he shaved it all off, on whim. My sister and i, as was our custom, rushed up the stairs to my parents bedroom one saturday morning to find him cleanshaven. I was aghast. My sister thought that my mother was having an affair with my uncle. That's how convinced she was that the shorn version of my dad was an impostor (she was kinda dumb back then though... or six, however you want to spin it)

Anyway, facial hair has always had a presence in my life.. is what I am getting at here... Thats the main thrust of this post... that i am writing... now... here on blogger...

And a while ago i found this:

and I printed it and posted it on my office window (if i have never mentioned this before, the only window in my office looks out on... the hallway of my office... I have taken to filling it with amusing odds and ends)... I also sent it to everyone I knew with the hormonal cocktail ideal for facial hair growth (this was most guys I knew... some are still in their "peach fuzz" phase of life...) with the challenge to create and send me all the types....

This met mostly with failure. One stalwart and amazing friends sent me a few... which I promptly lost....

But then I found this and I no longer have to rely on men!!!! (yay, another way)

I will be ordering the full gamut pretty soon.

...i still think this is funny....

The International Rules of Manhood
1: Under no circumstances may two men share an umbrella.

2: It is OK for a man to cry ONLY under the following circumstances:
(a) When a heroic dog dies to save its master.
(b) The moment Angelina Jolie starts unbuttoning her blouse.
(c) After wrecking your boss’ car.
(d) One hour, 12 minutes, 37 seconds into “The Crying Game”.
(e) When she is using her teeth.

3: Any Man who brings a camera to a bachelor party may be legally killed and eaten by his buddies.

4: Unless he murdered someone in your family, you must bail a friend out of jail within 12 hours.

5: If you’ve known a guy for more than 24 hours, his sister is off limits forever unless you actually marry her.

6: Moaning about the brand of free beer in a buddy’s fridge is forbidden. However complain at will if the temperature is unsuitable.

7: No man shall ever be required to buy a birthday present for another man. In fact, even remembering your buddy’s birthday is strictly optional. At that point, you must celebrate at a strip bar of the birthday boy’s choice.

8: On a road trip, the strongest bladder determines pit stops, not the weakest.

9: When stumbling upon other guys watching a sporting event, you may ask the score of the game in progress, but you may never ask who’s playing.

10: You may flatulate in front of a woman only after you have brought her to climax. If you trap her head under the covers for the purpose of flatulent entertainment, she’s officially your girlfriend.

11: It is permissible to drink a fruity alcohol drink only when you’re sunning on a tropical beach… and it’s delivered by a topless model and only when it’s free.

12: Only in situations of moral and/or physical peril are you allowed to kick another guy in the nuts.

13: Unless you’re in prison, never fight naked.

14: Friends don’t let friends wear Speedos. Ever. Issue closed.

15: If a man’s fly is down, that’s his problem, you didn’t see anything.

16: Women who claim they “love to watch sports” must be treated as spies until they demonstrate knowledge of the game and the ability to drink as much as the other sports watchers.

17: A man in the company of a hot, suggestively dressed woman must remain sober enough to fight.

18: Never hesitate to reach for the last beer or the last slice of pizza, but not both, that’s just greedy.

19: If you compliment a guy on his six-pack, you’d better be talking about his choice of beer.

20: Never join your girlfriend or wife in discussing a friend of yours, except if she’s withholding sex pending your response.

21: Phrases that may NOT be uttered to another man while lifting weights:
(a) Yeah, Baby, Push it!
(b) C’mon, give me one more! Harder!
(c) Another set and we can hit the showers!

22: Never talk to a man in a bathroom unless you are on equal footing: i.e., both urinating, both waiting in line, etc. For all other situations, an almost imperceptible nod is all the conversation you need.

23: Never allow a telephone conversation with a woman to go on longer than you are able to have sex with her. Keep a stopwatch by the phone. Hang up if necessary.

24: The morning after you and a girl who was formerly “just a friend” have carnal, drunken monkey sex, the fact that you’re feeling weird and guilty is no reason for you not to nail each other again before the discussion about what a big mistake it was occurs.

25: It is acceptable for you to drive her car. It is not acceptable for her to drive yours.

26: Thou shalt not buy a car in the colors of brown, pink, lime green, orange or sky blue.

27: The girl who replies to the question “What do you want for Christmas?” with “If you loved me, you’d know what I want!” gets an Xbox. End of story.

28: There is no reason for guys to watch Ice Skating or Men’s Gymnastics. Ever.

... and speaking of disney live action....

...this definitely smells like the beginnings of a great script...

hockey diva with an ego too big for his own good crashes and burns at his own doing....

that is where the story begins.

he returns to whatever bumfuck town he came out of and learns humility and love of the game by coaching some minors, ..... oh wait, that's Mighty Ducks....

...k, he has to humble himself to compete at high levels in a sport only slightly linked to what he has done in the past... of wait, thats The Cutting Edge...

Shit, Sean Avery should have learned his lesson from the Disney films of our youth... what a dumbfuck.

... feel the rhythm... feel the rhyme....

Come on bitches, uts BOBSLED TIME!!!!

That is right, Jamaica's bobsled team is back in Canada and training for the 2010 olympics.

that means we may possibly be looking at a sequel to one of my favourite live action disney films of all time!!!!

Its just so full of pride, and drama and moments to make you cry like a little school girl... how can you not love it, and cheer for the Jamaican bobsled team, even when your heart is entrenched in Canadian nationalism?

"British Alliance Member: We must also be concerned about the potential for embarrassment.
Irv: Oh, pardon me. I didn't realize that four black guys in a bobsled could make you blush. "

...a couple things cyberfound

first off TO DO LIST is a fucking funny time wasting blog...

it scans and posts other peoples to do lists.... it's like postsecret: the next generation, what are the steps in carrying out that anonymous secret sent in to Frank in Maryland.... curious, check the blog.....

second is this:

I demand you watch it, IMMEDIATELY!!!!

It's the loudest I have ever laughed in the office.... and I didn't care, because anyone that walked in was completely mesmerized by the hilarious patheticness of it... i started it over and over again... i love it...

Its part of the MORTIFIED project of public readings of angst-ridden teenage journals.... it's fucking fantastic! they have an after-school orchestra that accompanies them (adults playing the instruments they used to play in band, playing the songs they WISHED they played in band, think Meatball and STYX) and travel the country (USA, unfortunately) looking for people to share their most embarassing teen moments.....

It's like I found the mothership

...i usually hate commercials...

....having worked on them a bunch, and watching too much television I am a diligent hater of commercial breaks (sorry jon, but you know its true, they suck)....

however, this commercial for Sony Bravia is amazing... the whole campaign is great, but this one is especially genius... my favourite part's the clown......

...officially the best link I have ever been sent on a monday morning....

....sent to me by a friend who, arguably, has gotten me into more trouble than most anyone else.... and the only thing that could make me laugh on a swelteringly humid monday morning on a night after no sleep due to extreme heat, and a weekend where ... ahem.... outside forces... made me make probably a bit of a fool of myself in front of a boy i like....

....THIS is pure internet gold....
